Cycle length and power vary by setting
A standard dishwasher draws between 1,200 and 2,400 watts depending on the cycle. The heating element for drying and water heating is the largest load, while the wash pump and electronics use much less. Normal cycles can run 60 to 120 minutes from start to finish.
The quick or eco cycle often draws less peak power and runs for a shorter time, but may leave dishes wetter if the heated dry is turned off.
Heated drying makes a noticeable difference
Many dishwashers offer an air-dry or eco-dry option that disables the internal heating element at the end of the cycle. This can cut the total energy use of a load by 15 to 30 percent. The dishes take longer to dry, but the electricity saved per load is meaningful over a year.
- Open the door slightly after the cycle ends to let steam escape.
- Use the energy-saver or air-dry setting when available.
- Run full loads rather than partial ones to make each cycle count.
Monthly cost at a typical rate
At an illustrative 18 cents per kWh, one 90-minute load at 1,800 watts costs about 8 cents. Running one load per day for 30 days adds roughly $2.43 to the monthly energy bill. Hot water heating from the water heater is separate and is not included in the dishwasher's own power draw.
