Bigger isn't always better
A higher BTU rating means the air conditioner draws more watts. While a larger unit cools a room faster, if it's too big for the space, it will turn off before it has a chance to remove humidity from the air, leaving the room feeling cold and clammy.
Match the BTU to the room size
A standard 5,000 BTU unit (drawing roughly 450-500 watts) is meant for a 150 sq. ft. bedroom. Upgrading to an 8,000 BTU unit for the same small room will just increase your peak wattage draw without improving comfort.
- 5,000 to 6,000 BTU: Small bedrooms (100-250 sq. ft.)
- 8,000 to 10,000 BTU: Living rooms (300-450 sq. ft.)
- Always check the wattage on the EnergyGuide label, not just the BTU.
Check your window dimensions
Before buying any unit, measure your window's width and height. High-BTU air conditioners are physically larger and heavier, meaning an oversized unit might not fit into a standard narrow window or could require a heavy-duty support bracket.
