The heating elements cycle on and off
A typical electric oven draws 2,000 to 5,000 watts when the heating elements are active, but they do not stay on continuously. Once the oven reaches the set temperature, the elements cycle on and off to maintain it. The average power over a full cooking hour is usually 40 to 70 percent of the rated wattage.
Preheating draws the most power in the shortest time. Longer cooking at a steady temperature spreads the preheat energy over more time, lowering the average per-minute cost.
Self-cleaning uses concentrated energy
The self-cleaning cycle locks the oven door and heats the cavity to 800°F or higher, burning off food residue. This cycle can draw full power for several hours, making a single cleaning session cost roughly $1 to $3 in electricity depending on the oven and local rate.
Start the self-clean cycle right after normal cooking so the oven is already warm, and avoid opening the door during or immediately after the cycle.
- Use the self-clean cycle only when needed, not after every use.
- Wipe spills promptly so they do not bake on and require a full cleaning cycle.
- Consider using the oven light and checking through the window instead of opening the door during cooking.
Small changes that reduce cost
Convection fans circulate hot air and can reduce cooking time and temperature, saving 10 to 20 percent on energy. Glass or ceramic baking dishes retain heat better than dark metal. Turning the oven off 5 to 10 minutes before the food is done uses the retained heat to finish cooking without additional power.
